Captain
Don Stewart must have been quite a sight
that May afternoon in 1962 when, with
only 63 cents in his pocket and a
sailboat under his feet, he made
landfall on the island of Bonaire in the
Netherlands Antilles. Captain Don was
headed for Antiqua, but Antiqua never
got him, he was home.
When Beneath the Sea 2008 convenes at
the Meadowlands Exposition Center in
Secaucus, New Jersey the weekend of
March 28, 29 and 30, 2008, they will
celebrate the pioneering Spirit of
Captain Don Stewart, the dive resort he
created, Habitat Bonaire, and the
forty-five years he has given to
Bonaire, scuba diving, developing
Bonaire’s marine parks, its tourism
industry, and devising ways and means of
preserving the health and beauty of
Bonaire’s underwater environment. To his
credit he has done all this by providing
access to the reefs of Bonaire from the
shore … just a few fin kicks the man
says, and year-round you will find
yourself in shallow reefs alive with the
animals of the sea, fish, sponge, and
corals.
There is an old joke that you can
always recognize the pioneer, he’s the
one laying face-down in the field with
an arrow in his back. But that cynical
observation doesn’t allow for the
visions that pioneers such as Captain
Don Stewart are driven by, visions of a
future the rest of us live-in and enjoy
because these pioneering men-of-vision
took the time from their lives to be
sure the future was ready and in-place
for our moment beneath the waves, and
under the sun.
Captain Don Stewart is such a Pioneer
and such a man of vision. Be there,
Saturday, March 29th at the Beneath the
Sea awards dinner when Captain Don
Stewart receives his Diver of the Year
Pioneer award, After celebrating Captain
Don’s years of championship and service
for diving and Bonaire, go across the
hall and be a part of the Saturday Night
Film Festival. You will be glad you
came, and Beneath the Sea will be
pleased to have you there.
