W-1 PSI Visual Tank Inspector,
A. Dale Fox, (Morris room) 9 am - 4 pm

This practical course in the visual inspection of SCUBA cylinders prepares the graduate to professionally and thoroughly inspect breathing air cylinders. PSI training is internationally recognized by training agencies, manufacturers, the military services and by the courts as meeting the definition of "has been trained". Completion also satisfies the OSHA requirement for required hazardous material (LIAZMAT) training for all employees who fill, use or otherwise handle high pressure gas cylinders. W-2 Turning on to Technical Diving,
Dr. R.W. Bill Hamilton, Glenn Butler and Bernie Chowdhury, (Bergen room) 9-12

Technical Diving involves use of special breathing gas mixes and procedures to dive beyond the air range. Dr. Bill talks about mixes to use, methods of decompression, and both optimization and avoiding toxicity of oxygen. Glenn talks about methods of gas mixing, common problems, gas purity and oxygen safety concerns, and the "Mixing Myths" that haunt new Technical divers. Bernie stresses the importance of and methods of getting proper training, and briefly addresses equipment needs. Cost $75 Limit 30


W-3 Master Guide to Digital Photography,
Jack and Sue Drafahl, (Passaic room), 9-12

This in-depth workshop covers almost everything necessary to take dynamic underwater images with your digital camera. Topics range from setting up your camera to keeping in maintained, and almost everything in between. We will explore methods for taking digital pictures underwater and provide suggestions for improving your skills Students will learn how to obtain good exposures and improve lighting techniques using available light, flash and balancing the two.

Included in the workshop will be lectures on composition, backscatter reduction, understanding white balance, minimizing shutter delay, proper battery selection, digital media storage, close-up and macro tips, maximizing your wide angle systems, animal behavior, and reef protection. There will also be an in-depth section illustrating the importance of the shooting RAW files in difficult lighting situations.   Cost $65. Limit 30


W-4 Underwater Photography Made Simple,
Michel Gilbert &Danielle Alary, (Sussex room) 9-12 

This 3-hour workshop will help any beginner or intermediate underwater photographer. Learn which equipment is best used in fish portrait, macro or wide-angle photography. Michel & Danielle will share with you their no-nonsense simple approach to underwater photography. Learn how to work with your strobes in manual mode by remembering 4 numbers. This workshop will explain the choices between film and digital photography. If you want a head start, this is the workshop to attend. A fresh look at a specialty by two seasoned pros who love to share their knowledge. Cost $65 Limit 30


W-5 DAN Dive Safety Workshop,
Eric Douglas, Joel Dovenbarger , DAN staff, (Bergen room), 1-4 

Divers Alert Network (DAN) will put on a special workshop focusing on three topics: the Physiology and health of scuba diving, learning from Diving Injuries and Fatalities, and Diving Safety information you can use. Learn about the real factors influencing safety in your diving, and how to become a safer diver. Participants will receive reference materials from the presentation and a certificate of completion from DAN. This is a “must” for divemasters, instructors or serious divers. Cost $75 Limit 30


W-6 Advanced Techniques using the Digital Darkroom,
Rod Klein, (Passaic room) 1-4

Let former Fathoms Magazine Digital Editor Rod Klein help you overhaul your workflow and take your underwater digital images to the next level and beyond. Learn Raw file processing and “Secret” Photoshop Workflow methods for digital underwater imaging. The workshop will cover Basic Color Management, Monitor calibration, Raw Processing in Nikon Capture & ACR, Special Photoshop techniques using Adjustment Layers & Layer Masks and Special Sharpening Techniques using Photo Kit Sharpener. Cost $65 Limit 30

W-7 Mastering Strobe Lighting Techniques,
Cathy Church, (Sussex room) 1-4

This workshop will cover strobe exposures for macro, zoom and wide-angle lenses. It will deal with strobe use for primary and balanced flash fill, for both film and digital systems. Other topics treated are creative lighting techniques and using multiple strobes. The workshop will include two short "Slide" shows and question and answer period. Anyone who brings their strobe will receive a free exposure chart customized for their digital or film camera. We will test any strobe that has a slave function or a Nikonos 5-pin cord attached so that we can flash it to measure its output. Cost $65. Limit 30

W-8 PSI Inspector Update,

This is a 3 hour workshop exclusively for personal previously trained as a PSI Visual Cylinder Inspector. The course is recommended for those whose last formal VCI training was 3 or more years ago and will meet OSHA and DOT update training requirements. Attendees MUST bring a copy of their PSI certificate showing their PSI Inspector Number. Cost $160. Limit 27


W-9 The Basics of Underwater Video,
Larry and Denise Tackett, (Bergen room), 9-12

This workshop will introduce you to what is needed to shoot underwater video. Topics covered will include cameras, housing, lighting, accessories and basic shooting concepts, such as: shot types, wide-angle and macro, filters, white balance, exposure control, camera moves, and more. If you want to get started in u/w video or are already shooting but have not mastered the basics this workshop is for you. Cost $65. Limit 30


W-10 Underwater Photoshop,
Jack and Sue Drafahl, (Passaic room) 9-12

This workshop is designed to help underwater photographers who are familiar with Photoshop but want to explore the more advanced features of Adobe Photoshop. This is the perfect advanced course for previous attendees to our Digital Imaging workshops. We will show you how to improve your editing skills, speed up the editing process, and set up a workflow to streamline your image editing. There will be tips on extreme salvage, masking techniques, advanced color correction, understanding the levels editor, burning and dodging, and advanced layer adjustments. Other topics include curve editor, sharpening techniques, masking tips, boosting image resolution, shortcuts, advanced backscatter tools, plug-in filters, the healing brush, and working with Camera Raw files. W-11 Making a Picture-The Next level in Photography,
Michel Gilbert & Danielle Alary, (Sussex room) 9-12

This workshop is aimed at those who want to get more out of their u/w photography and complements the speaker’s other workshop "Underwater Photography Made Simple". Digital or film-based, light is the image and this workshop is designed to help you work with light. In an accessible way, Michel & Danielle share their knowledge and experience to help you bring your photography to the next level, taking it beyond the snapshot world. They will explain how they work in the field and in their studio to maximize the "keepers" and keep post- processing at a manageable level. Cost $65. Limit 30


W-12 PSI Eddy Current Technician Course,

Eddy current testing is designed to detect cracks in the neck area of aluminum cylinders. This 3-hour workshop provides manufacturer’s approved training of the operation of the Visual Plus and Visual Eddy instruments. As this training is an extension of basic PSI VCI training, attendees MUST bring a copy of their PSI certificate showing their inspector number. It is not required but recommended that attendees also bring their own equipment so they may train on their own instruments. Cost $160.Limit 27


W-13 Shooting, Marketing and Selling your U/W Photography,
Larry and Denise Tackett, (Bergen room) 1-4

Everyone would love to have one of his or her images published in a magazine, book, calendar etc. What does it take to make that happen? This workshop will discuss how to go about marketing yourself and your imagery whether you have 100 or 100,000 images. Special emphasis will be placed on using the power of the Internet to help make those all-important first and subsequent sales. Students should bring 20 of their images for review.
