2018 Scholarships

 

Recreational/Public Safety Diver Medic Technician (RDMT) Scholarship -
$1000 Value (Sponsored by The Diver Medic/Chantelle Newman. NEW THIS YEAR 
Application Deadline is December 30, 2017. The Diver Medic is passionate about diver safety and believes it is critical that all divers learn and practice diver safety.  This course was created to educate and train those with a specific interest in dive medicine and pursuing further education in the field of dive medicine. This course ensures that you are prepared for, and can deal with any diving related medical emergency. There are two parts to the course, both theory and practical-based elements. The theory will be done completely online and will take between 30 to 40 hours to complete.  Once you have completed your online theory you have 3 months to register for one of our practical sessions, which will take 3 days to complete.  The practical sessions are hosted all over the USA. Once you have completed and passed both the online theory and practical session you will then be awarded the Recreational/Public Safety Diver medical technician course certificate.  Your certificate is valid for two years.  You must be at least a rescue diver or equivalent to qualify and at least 18 years of age.   Click here to access the scholarship application guidelines and form for this scholarship

Maritime Career Scholarship - $1000 NEW THIS YEAR Application Deadline is December 30, 2017. The maritime industry is made up of all businesses which relate to the transportation of goods and people over major waterways, including cargo shippers, cruise lines, ferries, shipbuilders, military operations and more. There are many opportunities in the maritime field. This scholarship will be awarded to an individual, ages 18-22, interested in pursuing a career in a maritime-related field, including but not limited to marine engineering, marine transportation, global business and transportation, marine technology/small vessel operations, and other related fields.  Click here to access the scholarship application guidelines and form for this scholarship

Don Reynolds Memorial Scholarship - $1000 Application Deadline is December 30, 2017 A living act of remembrance from the Board of Trustees of Beneath The Sea for one of their own that passed too soon to be forgotten. To be eligible for this scholarship you must be a deserving young man or woman, ages 18-22, currently pursuing a marine career future in a program at a recognized training facility for which the addition of scuba diving certification would enhance the credentials and talent you already possess and thus serve to further your opportunities. Discovery Scholarship - $1500 Application Deadline is December 30, 2017. The Board of Trustees of Beneath The Sea has endowed this Discovery Scholarship to an individual 13-15 years of age searching for a life focus, to consider a marine career. This scholarship may be applied to any recognized program in the field of marine study or its many support services. Sea of Tomorrow Scholarship - $1000 Application Deadline is December 30, 2017. To be awarded to an individual 18-22 years of age for participation in a recognized or accredited program in the fields of marine environmental conservation, biology, ecology, research, or training in a diving related program necessary for participation in these fields of endeavor.Click here to access the scholarship application guidelines and form for this scholarship

Jordan Viders Spirit of the Sea Award & Scholarship - $1000 Application Deadline is December 30, 2017.  Established in 2007 in celebration of Jordan Viders, son of Hillary and Richard Viders, the Spirit of the Sea award and Scholarship means to recognize the forces driving young adults 22-29 years of age, who, like Jordan, follow a career path using electronics to illuminate and expand our underwater knowledge. The Art of Underwater Photography Scholarship – An Introduction - $1000 Value (Sponsored by Maria Hults and Riekstins Restaurants) Application Deadline is December 30, 2017. A beginner’s hands-on introduction study class in Underwater Photography and imaging fundamentals given by renowned underwater photographer and Women Divers Hall of Fame member - Maria Hults. Thanks to the generosity of Riekstins Restaurants, this course will include a camera and underwater housing suitable for beginners. Applicants should be 18-22. Sid Aconsky “Measure Twice, Cut Once” Scholarship - $1000 (Sponsored by The Bottom Dwellers/Friends of Sid Aconsky) Application Deadline is December 30, 2017.  Through his generosity, Simon “Sid” Aconsky left a legacy. His motto, “Measure twice, cut once” means be sure before you proceed. A diver since the 1960s, Sid’s final dive trip in 2012 was to the Maldives. He also redefined NYC Fire Dept. code, and before he passed away, he was named Honorary Battalion Chief, NYC Fire Dept. Sid’s friends honor him now with this scholarship for a person between the ages of 18-23 to be involved in learning to scuba dive through oceanic research, by purchasing equipment or furthering their scuba education.  Click here to access the scholarship application guidelines and form for this scholarship

 

Advanced Scuba Diving Certification Scholarship - $1000 Value (Sponsored by PADI and Oceanic Worldwide) Application Deadline is December 30, 2017. Beneath the Sea, PADI, and Oceanic Worldwide announced they would make funds and equipment available to a young scholar ages 22-29 looking to take their scuba training to an advanced or professional level:  Divemaster, First Responder, Instructor. This scholarship is $1,000 dollars divided $750 to the training facility, the remainder in the form of equipment from Oceanic Worldwide. Ocean Pals Junior Dive Training Grant - $1000 (Sponsored by Beneath The Sea Ocean Pals (WDHOF member JoAnn Zigahn) and WDHOF co-founder Beneath The Sea, Inc.)  Application Deadline is October 31, 2017. A $1,000 training grant (up to $500 for training and up to $500 for dive equipment) will be awarded to a deserving young woman, ages 13-15, who wishes to begin or further her dive education/training. Up to $500 may be used for dive training, and up to $500 may be used for dive equipment. When the recipient enrolls in an approved diving course/program and purchases dive equipment, the training facility/equipment vendor must send the invoice to WDHOF; funds are paid directly to the training facility/vendor, and not to the recipient. APPLICATION PROCESS FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP IS NOW CLOSED.

Jorge Beale Hyperbaric Medicine Scholarship (Sponsored by Life Support Technologies) Application Deadline is January 30, 2017. The Life Support Technologies group has generously created this scholarship in memory of a dear friend and co-worker, Doctor Jorge Beale. A true pioneer and educator in diving and hyperbaric medicine, Dr. Beale had been fundamental in the vitality of Life Support Technologies group and their work supporting the Divers Alert Network. The winner of this scholarship will be invited to a Life Support Technologies forty-hour UHMS approved course (visit www.LifeSupport-USA.com for course dates and info.)

SECONN Open Water Certification Scholarships - Two scholarships - $500 each - will be awarded.  (Sponsored by SECONN Skin Divers-regional dive club in Southeast, Connecticut) Application Deadline is December 30, 2017.  To encourage individuals between the ages of 16-24 to obtain their open water scuba certification, the SECONN Dive Club will award $500 each to two individuals. The open water scuba training will be conducted at one of their member scuba shops in Connecticut.  Applicants must submit an essay (maximum of one page) on why they would like to become scuba certified.  Include your age, birth date and contact information. Applicants should email their essay to president@seconndivers.org. Be sure to put “Scuba Scholarship” in the subject line.

 

Dare2Dream Open Water Certification Scholarship - $500 (Sponsored by Dare2Dream Foundation) NEW THIS YEAR Application Deadline is December 30, 2017.  This scholarship will be awarded to a NYC inner city individual between the ages of 14-17 to encourage them to obtain their open water scuba certification. Applicants must submit an essay (maximum of one page) on why they would like to become scuba certified.  Include your age, birth date, school, grade and contact information. Applicants should email their essay to nycdare2dream@aol.com. Be sure to put “Scuba Scholarship” in the subject line.

 

Venoutsos Open Water Certification Scholarship - $500 (Sponsored by Peter Venoutsos) NEW THIS YEAR Application Deadline is December 30, 2017. This scholarship will be awarded to an individual between the ages of 16-24 to encourage them to obtain their open water scuba certification. The open water scuba training will be conducted at one of the dive shops in Connecticut. Applicants must submit an essay (maximum of one page) on why they would like to become scuba certified. Include your age, birth date and contact information. Applicants should email their essay to pvenoutsos@cox.net. Be sure to put “Scuba Scholarship” in the subject line.
