2016 BENEATH THE SEA SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS  

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF BENEATH THE SEA AND ITS SUPPORTERS offer a variety of scholarship opportunities for young people interested in exploring and protecting the ocean environment. Scholarship/Grant candidates should carefully read the qualifications applicable to each scholarship and then submit an application, indicating the scholarship of interest.  Scholarships are posted on www.BeneathTheSea.org.

GENERAL RULES FOR THE FOLLOWING SCHOLARSHIPS

  • Don Reynolds Memorial Scholarship

  • The Art of Underwater Photography Scholarship

  • Sea of Tomorrow Scholarship

  • Discovery Scholarship

  • Jordan Viders’ Spirit of the Sea Scholarship

  • Scholarships are only open to candidates who are residents of the United States.

  • Applicants may apply for only one scholarship each year.

  • All applicants will be notified of results by mid-February.

  • Applications must be submitted electronically via the online application on this website.  (See application form link at the end of this document.)

  • Scholarship funds are paid directly to the provider of the service or products acquired by the scholarship recipient. Scholarship awards may be considered as taxable income. Beneath The Sea suggests that you consult with a tax advisor (accountant) to determine how receipt of this scholarship may impact your tax obligation.

SCHOLARSHIPS APPLICATION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 15                   

APPLICATION PROCESS:

  1. Fill out the Beneath The Sea Scholarship Online Application Form available on www.BeneathTheSea.org.  

  2. Submit two letters from persons in your community, i.e., scuba instructors, teachers, employers, mentors, etc.  Letters of recommendation should be sent as an attachment to an email addressed to scholarships@BeneathTheSea.org. The subject line should state: Letter of Recommendation for (Your Name).  Letters of recommendation must arrive by the deadline DECEMBER 15 (midnight EST) or your application will be invalidated.

Application Guidance

  • All requested information must be included. Incomplete applications (including missing letters of recommendation) are ineligible.

  • Spelling or grammar errors must be avoided. Proof all work, and we suggest you ask someone else to proof it as well.

  • Give your references at least two weeks to write letters of recommendation, and follow up to ensure the letters are sent in prior to deadline.

  • References from family members, while heartfelt, carry less weight than references from a teacher, coach, employer, or non-family member.

  • References that are vague and do not give specific examples carry less weight.

  • Please retain a copy of your application and all supporting materials.

REMINDER TWO LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION MUST BE SUBMITTED TO scholarships@BeneathTheSea.org by DECEMBER 15.
RECIPIENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED IN MID-FEBURARY.
